Brooklyn Center Stream Bank Restoration Event
Great River Greening
Location: Brooklyn Center
Date: Saturday, May 21
Time: 8:30am-12:30pm Great River Greening needs your help in restoring a degraded tributary to the Mississippi River in Brooklyn Center. Shingle Creek has suffered from years of development and polluted storm water runoff from city streets, parking lots and loss of perennial native vegetation cover that has degraded the stream's water quality leading to a loss in habitat and species diversity throughout the corridor. With your help we will stabilize the banks of Shingle Creek by planting dogwood and willow shrub live stake cuttings. Volunteer efforts will diminish stream bank erosion and improve habitat for migratory birds and in-stream habitat for aquatic organisms on which many of these bird species rely. The project helps protect the water quality of the Mississippi River which positively impacts the entire metro area watershed. Ages: All ages are welcome Time Commitment: A few hours Contact: Mark Turbak at 651.665.9500 x 11 www.greatrivergreening.org

Spring Rake, Rattle, and Roll
HandyWorks
Date/Time: Friday, Apr 15 - Sunday, May 15
The HandyWorks Spring Rake, Rattle, and Roll takes place mid-April through mid-May with weather permitting. Here's what happens: after you let us know what date your group is available and how many people you have, we will match you with a few elderly people who live near each other in south, southeast, or northeast Minneapolis. Then on your Rake, Rattle, and Roll day, your group will help these seniors get ready for the mowing season by raking and bagging leaves. Volunteers will need to provide their own rakes and the owner of the home should supply the bags. However, we would request that your group bring extra bags for the occasional homeowner who is homebound and unable to get his or her own.
Ages: Minimum age 5
Time Commitment: Will depend on the size of your group and the number of homes.
